This month I’ve mostly been coaching tired people. Rushing from pillar to post, busy closing out the year at work, making preparations for the perfect Christmas at home, maxed out by social commitments and crumbling under the weight of expectations they layer on themselves. Trying to be all things to all people is a recipe for seasonal burnout. Who wants that? I know I don’t. So let’s remind ourselves of the value of a ratio rule. There are lots of them, with probably the most famous being Pareto’s 80:20 principle – This is the one, named after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, that suggests 20% of your activities will account for 80% of your results. However, the ratio I would like you to focus on this festive season is the 70% effort rule. Aim for good enough over perfection. Aim for realistic goals and hold back that 30% to invest in your own wellbeing. You’ll thank me for it come January!
